Spirits and Innate Powers

Frequently Asked Questions

Definitions
  • What are "your Actions"? (e.g., for Responsibilities to the Dead or Spread Tumult and Delusion)
As a general guideline, anything done by your Spirit Panel or Power Cards, including any consequences directly following from the game rules (e.g., destroying Invaders/Dahan that have taken Damage equal to or greater than their Health, earning Fear from destroying Towns/Cities, destroying Presence / cascading when adding Blight).
In particular, the following are your Actions.
    • Using one icon in a Growth option during the Spirit Phase [*]
    • Gaining Energy from your Presence track during the Spirit Phase
    • Playing and paying for all of your cards during the Spirit Phase
    • Using one Presence Track icon during the Spirit Phase [†]
    • Using one Power, whether the original use or repeating that Power (even if other Spirits make choices as part of resolving that Power)
    • Performing a triggered Action set up by one of your Powers (e.g., Vengeance of the Dead) or Special Rules (e.g., Ocean in Play)
    • Using a special rule that has an immediate, stand-alone effect (e.g., Sharp Fangs Behind the Leaves replacing its Presence with Call Forth Predators)
    • Doing something a Power grants you the option to do later at your discretion (e.g., adding a Disease with Scream Disease Into the Wind, dealing Damage with the stone Beasts created by Unearth a Beast of Wrathful Stone)
Note that some special rules refer to "your Powers", which is more restrictive than "your Actions".
[*] If a Growth icon has an "xN" (e.g., for Fractured Days Split the Sky) it means that you have N copies of that Growth icon; each one is its own action. If a Growth icon does something in "each" land that meets a condition (e.g., for Ocean's Hungry Grasp), it's one action in each of those lands.
[†] Passive bonuses on Presence tracks, like Elements and Range bonuses, are always available; there is no action to gain them.

General Play
  • What's the timing of ongoing effects expiring?
All "this turn" effects wear off at the same time. For now, assume all normal Time Passes activity (discard, lose elements, clear damage, ongoing effects expire) is simultaneous. Cards like "Gift of Constancy" (which modify discarding Powers) or "Unquenchable Flames" work because they explicitly specify a timing.
Rules for non-standard things that happen during Time Passes (like Shroud of Silent Mist's "Slow and Silent Death") can be done before or after effects wearing off unless otherwise specified.
If it ever becomes clear that there really ought to be some sort of internal ordering to Time Passes, we'll call out that ordering in whatever expansion / FAQ it becomes relevant.

Power Cards
  • If I get a Range boost, what Ranges does it affect?
Anything that's your action, has a printed Range arrow, is not itself a Range boost, and obeys other restrictions (e.g., if the bonus is restricted to Powers or merely targeting Powers).
So not just the arrow under "Target Land" on most Power Cards, but also, e.g., Range arrows in the text of Powers (e.g., Unrelenting Growth) and Range arrows in Spirit Phase actions (like "Move a Presence 1" as a Presence-track ability). Obviously, Power Cards that boost Range won't be able to help with Spirit Phase actions, because Power Cards are used too late in the turn for that.
    • They do not affect Gather or Push, because there is no Range arrow. (And the definition of those keywords involves "an adjacent land".)
    • They do not affect "Your land" or "lands with your Presence" because there is no Range arrow. (And that wording is about what is in the land, not how far away the land is.)
    • They do not affect Ranges on other players' Powers (even if targeting you), because they are not your actions.
It also doesn't boost the Range at which Flame Markers make lands vulnerable to damage/destruction in Rituals of the Destroying Flame.
The original wording of "Sky Stretches to Shore," if read strictly, would cause it to work a little differently (only affecting targeting, not Range arrows in the text of Powers), but for the sake of consistency with other Powers that boost Range, it boosts all Range arrows.

  • What happens if you give a Range boost to someone who's used Bargains of Power and Protection? Does it matter if they played Bargains on that turn or an earlier turn?
In either case, for the turn the Range boost is active, it increases the "within Range 1 of your Presence" at which that Spirit affects Dahan. The boost wears off at the end of the turn, even though Bargains of Power and Protection doesn't.
This includes range bonuses to "your Power Card" (e.g., Volcano Looming High), but not bonuses specifically for targeting.
If a Range boost only increases the Range for a single Action (e.g., the Reach Aspect ignoring Range), then the farther-afield Dahan only grant Defend for one action of your choice (usually a single Ravage in one land).
