Aspects

• Does the middle threshold of the Encircle Aspect benefit from that Aspect's Range boost?
  No, since that threshold doesn't target anything.

• If Shadows Flicker Like Flame, with the Reach aspect, uses Reaching Grasp, can it let a Spirit ignore range for the entire turn?
  No. Range boosts do not modify other Range boosts, only actual Ranges that you yourself are checking.

• If Shadows with Reach ignores Range for a Power, then later Repeats that Power, do they get to ignore Range again?
  Yes. When used on Power, Reach is treated as a modification to the Power's Range. (And Range modifiers apply to Repeats.)

General Play

• How does "resolve powers in the order they're written" work for things like "If you have (elements), +1 Range"?
  Internal modifiers like this – a Power changing its own Speed, Range, or other targeting – are looked at when they're relevant (like during targeting), not during normal Power resolution. This is an exception to "do things strictly in order once using the Power".

  This is also the case for Powers like The Jungle Hungers, where a threshold modifies the instructions earlier in the Power. Technically, every use of "Instead..." in an innate power works this way; it's pretty simple for human minds to understand the intent, but the formal specification is messier.

Power Cards

• If I get a Range boost, what Ranges does it affect?
  Anything that's your action, has a printed Range arrow, is not itself a Range boost, and obeys other restrictions (e.g., if the bonus is restricted to Powers or merely targeting Powers).

  So not just the arrow under "Target Land" on most Power Cards, but also, e.g., Range arrows in the text of Powers (e.g., Unrelenting Growth) and Range arrows in Spirit Phase actions (like "Move a Presence 1" as a Presence-track ability). Obviously, Power Cards that boost Range won't be able to help with Spirit Phase actions, because Power Cards are used too late in the turn for that.

  • They do not affect Gather or Push, because there is no Range arrow. (And the definition of those keywords involves "an adjacent land".)
  • They do not affect "Your land" or "lands with your Presence" because there is no Range arrow. (And that wording is about what is in the land, not how far away the land is.)
  • They do not affect Ranges on other players' Powers (even if targeting you), because they are not your actions.

  It also doesn't boost the Range at which Flame Markers make lands vulnerable to damage/destruction in Rituals of the Destroying Flame.

  The original wording of "Sky Stretches to Shore," if read strictly, would cause it to work a little differently (only affecting targeting, not Range arrows in the text of Powers), but for the sake of consistency with other Powers that boost Range, it boosts all Range arrows.

• If a Power on a Power Card has been modified, do those modifiers persist if the Power Card leaves play?
  No, any modifiers to a Power in play, whether modifying Speed, Range, Target, or Effect, are to the Power in play, not to the Power Card itself. If the Power Card leaves play, it does not retain those modifications, nor does it automatically re-gain them if it is played again that turn.

• Does Sky Stretches to Shore boost Range arrows inside a Power's effect text?
  Yes. On a strict reading, it shouldn't - Range arrows inside a Power's effect text aren't part of "targeting", and it reads "for targeting Coastal lands" - but it's much clearer to have all Range boosts work the same way.
  

  (In general, Range boosts affect all Range arrows, including those in the text of Powers.)

• If you Repeat a card that boosts its own Range via an elemental threshold (eg: Sap the Strength of Multitudes), but don't have the threshold when you Repeat it, is the Repeat's range still boosted?
  Yes. Changes to Range/Speed persist across Repeats.

  If you do have the threshold, you don't get the +1 Range again. (This is counter to a strict reading of the rules; the threshold would be better written as "This Power's Range is 1", the way Talons of Lightning's is.)

  This does not apply to Carapaced Land, which has a greater Range for targeting lands with Beasts as an intrinsic part of its effect.

• What happens if you give a Range boost to someone who's used Bargains of Power and Protection? Does it matter if they played Bargains on that turn or an earlier turn?
  In either case, for the turn the Range boost is active, it increases the "within Range 1 of your Presence" at which that Spirit affects Dahan. The boost wears off at the end of the turn, even though Bargains of Power and Protection doesn't.

  This includes range bonuses to "your Power Card" (e.g., Volcano Looming High), but not bonuses specifically for targeting.

  If a Range boost only increases the Range for a single Action (e.g., the Reach Aspect ignoring Range), then the farther-afield Dahan only grant Defend for one action of your choice (usually a single Ravage in one land).

Range and Targeting

• When a special rule grants a Range boost specifically for targeting lands with specific traits/contents, like Shadows of the Dahan, does that apply to Range arrows within a Power's text?
  No, that bonus is specifically for choosing the target of a land-targeting Power.

  Use the Power as though the number in the "Range" box were increased or completely ignored (depending on the Range boost in question) and the extra target requirement were included in the "Target Land" box. In the case of Shadows of the Dahan, this means ignoring the Range number entirely (but not anything else in the "Range" box!) and adding "Dahan" to whatever else is already in the "Target Land" box.

  This differs from general-purpose Range boosts, which apply to all Range arrows.

  Though early printings of Sky Stretches to Shore use the word "targeting," the text of that Power has been revised to work like other Range-boosing Powers and is not subject to this restriction.

Spirits and Innate Powers

• For Finder of Paths Unseen growth option that lets you ignore ranges or Presence icon that gives you +1 Range, what does this effect?
  Everything. Any time there is a range arrow, you can either increase the number by 1 or ignore the range check altogether.

• If Devouring Teeth Lurks Underfoot gets a Range bonus to Death Approaches from Beneath the Surface and targets a land at least Range 2 from its Presence, does it have to Gather Presence into that land?
  No, "Gather" can only bring in pieces from adjacent lands.

  If it used "Move" — e.g., "Move 1 Presence to the target land" — then it could happen at any Range, like Fathomless Mud of the Swamp's Spreading and Dreadful Mire.

• If all you can do with an innate power is change its Speed or Range (eg: either of Thunderspeaker's innates with 4 Air only), is that enough to target and use the Power?
  No, a power needs to have the potential to do something (not just modify its own attributes) in order to be targeted or used.

  This is usually irrelevant, but can occasionally be important (for, e.g., Scream Disease Into the Wind, or other "after using a power on a land..." effects.)

  It does not need to actually do something, as long as it has an instruction that could in theory modify the game state. Setting up a triggered action for the current Power only (eg: Lure's first innate) doesn't count, either; it's effectively an internal modifier as well, despite using a trigger for timing.

• When is the Range bonus of Reach from the Infinite Darkness determined?
  When measuring Range for a Power. Count up your Presence in The Endless Dark to determine your bonus Range at that moment.

  This could be different than the amount of Presence that was in The Endless Dark when Reach from the Infinite Darkness was used earlier in the turn!
