Effect Rules

• If multiple pieces would be upgraded or downgraded simultaneously (e.g., with the Lair Aspect), is it possible to upgrade or downgrade the same piece multiple times?
  No. Pick all of the pieces you want to replace first, then upgrade/downgrade them all at the same time.

  However, it is possible to upgrade/downgrade a piece multiple times if they are replaced as part of different instructions (e.g., downgrading the same Invader with two different thresholds of Lost in the Endless Dark) or with two different actions (e.g., different players downgrading pieces in the same land with Trade Suffers at Terror Level III). Also, the special rule granted by Serene Waters explicitly allows choosing the same piece twice even if the timing is ambiguous.

• What counts as "adding" a piece (e.g., adding an Invader for Confounding Mists)?
  A new piece getting placed on the board.
  

  In the Confounding Mists case, this most commonly occurs due to a Build or Explore action, but can also happen due to Events, Adversary effects, or Scenarios.

  Pieces that are pushed, gathered, brought, or otherwise moved then count as "moved," but not "added." Replacing one piece with another (or multiple others) counts as neither adding nor moving the new pieces; while the pieces representing that entity have changed, the entity itself is not a new arrival.

Elements and Elemental Thresholds

• Can you use the threshold effects of Innate Powers, even if you can't use the effects above them?
  Yes, each line is evaluated independently, depending on the Elements you activate the power with.

General Play

• If you damage an Invader/Dahan and then replace it with another Invader/Dahan, does the new piece enter the game damaged?
  Yes. (Rulebook p. 18) When you replace a piece with another piece, the new piece comes in with whatever Damage the original piece had.
  

  For example, if you deal 2 Damage to a City and then replace it with a Town, that Town is immediately destroyed.

  If you replace a damaged piece with two or more pieces (as when "Dissolve the Bonds of Kinship" replaces a City with two Explorers), the damage (and Strife tokens, if applicable) get divided between the new pieces as you choose.

  Note that if a piece is replaced as part of being saved from destruction (as is done by the Transforming Aspect), then Damage is cleared before the piece is replaced, so there's no Damage to divide. (Strife tokens are still divided normally, if relevant.)

Power Cards

• For the base effect of "Instruments of Their Own Ruin," if there are multiple Invaders with Strife, do they deal Damage simultaneously? Can they deal Damage to each other?
  Yes and yes.

  So if you had a City, a Town, and an Explorer all with Strife, the Town + Explorer could destroy the City while the City destroyed the Town + Explorer.

  The same applies to the Terror Level III effects of the Fear cards "Discord" and "Theological Strife," and to the "Afflict with Bloodthirst" Innate Power of Wounded Waters Taste of Ruin.

• When Invaders deal Damage to each other, is that damage dealt simultaneously?
  Yes, Invaders can destroy each other this way.

  Damage from a single effect is done simultaneously. For instance, with the threshold effect of Dissolve the Bonds of Kinship, a City, a Town, and 5 Explorers can wipe each other out.

• In Pent-Up Calamity, when you "return" Strife, where does it go?
  "Return" here means to Add back into the targeted land. In the case of Strife tokens, they can go onto any Invaders, not necessarily the ones that they were removed from.

  This also counts as adding those tokens for the purposes of, e.g., Grinning Trickster's A Real Flair for Discord special rule.

Setup

• When setting up a Spirit, what happens if the setup instructions are impossible (e.g., adding Presence to a land with Blight when that board has no Blight).
  Either don't start that Spirit on that board or follow the instructions as best as you can, choosing freely when no lands meet the criteria given. [Jagged Earth Rulebook p. 6]

  When choosing freely, use theme as your guide — if you're in this situation, you're likely playing on the thematic map, after all!

• If a Spirit has multiple legal ways to set up on the island, can it choose the one it likes best?
  Yes, when there are multiple choices that equally meet the setup conditions, the player gets to choose the one they like. For some Spirits, this will only happen on the thematic side or against specific Adversaries/Scenarios.

Spirit Phase

• When your Presence track gives you "Any" element, when do you have to choose what element that is? Can you change what it is during the turn?
  You can wait until the middle of your turn to choose what it is, but once you've set it for a turn, it can't change that turn [base rulebook p. 14, last item under Presence Tracks]

  This holds true even if you're restricted on which Elements you can choose (e.g., Wounded Waters Bleeding having a "Water / Animal" space instead of a full "Any"). [Nature Incarnate rulebook p. 9]

  This contrasts with the timing of choosing flexible Elements gained from different sources.

Spirits and Innate Powers

• If a Spirit has an unusually-shaped Presence Track, how does it determine the number of Energy/Plays it has access to each turn?
  Use the highest single Energy number and Plays number, then add any +Energy and +Plays from other spaces on the tracks.

  For example, if Finder of Paths Unseen has uncovered its spaces with:

  • Sun
  • 1 Energy, Moon
  • 2 Energy, Water
  • +2 Energy
  • +1 Energy, +1 Range
  • +1 Card Play/Turn

  Then it has 5 Energy/turn (2 + 2 + 1, ignoring the Moon space because the Water space grants a higher base amount) and 2 Plays/turn (1 + 1).

• Can Wounded Waters Bleeding claim more than 5 Healing Markers?
  Yes. There is no limit on the number of Healing Markers that Wounded Waters Bleeding can claim

  In the rather unlikely case that you don’t completely heal on Turn 5, place any additional Healing Markers near the others.

• Does Wounded Waters Bleeding spend Healing Markers when they gain a Healing Card?
  No, Healing Markers are permanently claimed; they are never spent.

• Can the Healing Markers claimed by Wounded Waters Bleeding be used for anything other than checking which Healing Markers you have? (e.g., do they grant Elements?)
  No, Healing Markers are just Healing Markers; they don't do anything else associated with Elements or Element Markers.

  Element Markers don't inherently do anything; they're just used to track effects that are associated with Elements in some way. While Starlight Seeks its Form uses them to track permanent Elements, that's only because its Slowly Coalescing Nature special rule explicitly grants that effect. And while Shifting Memory of Ages can spend its prepared Element Markers for various effects, that's only because Insights into the World's Nature, Elemental Teachings, and its Presence Tracks grant those benefits.

• How many Healing Cards can Wounded Waters Bleeding claim?
  At most two.

  Both Serene Waters and Roiling Waters can only be claimed as a first Healing Card, and both Waters Renew and Waters Taste of Ruin can only be claimed as a final Healing Card.

  Though it’s not advantageous to do so, you can skip both Serene Waters and Roiling Waters to fully heal with only one Healing Card, or even never gain a Healing Card at all!

• When Roiling Waters Bleeding adds a non-Beasts piece that counts as a Beasts token (e.g., the Presence of a Spirit under Settled into Hunting-Grounds), does it deal Damage?
  Generally, no. Lands of Blood and Savagery checks if the piece that's being added is already a Beasts, not if it will be a Beasts once it arrives.

  Nevertheless, Roiling Waters Bleeding deals Damage if repositioning a piece on the island that already counts as a Beasts, whether that's the Incarna of Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine, the Presence of a Spirit under Settle Into Hunting Grounds, or a Sacred Site belonging to Many Minds Move as One.

• If a special rule is limited to once per Power (e.g., those on the Healing Cards of Wounded Waters Bleeding), how does that limit apply to Repeated Powers?
  The limit is once per Power use, so you are free to use the special rule again when Repeating a Power.

• Can Wounded Waters Bleeding use its third Growth Option on the turn it plays its first Healing Card (usually Turn 3)?
  No.

  This Growth Option checks if you have already claimed a Healing Card; it doesn’t “look ahead” to whether or not you’re going to claim a Healing Card at the end of the current Spirit Phase.
