Effect Rules

• When instructed to "Repeat this Power", do you have to obey the range/target land restrictions?
  Only if it doesn't tell you where to Repeat it. If a Repeat specifies where to use it, you obey those instructions instead of the usual Range and Target restrictions (p. 19) even if the land would normally be untargetable. In the rare case that the origin land matters when instructed to Repeat a Power in a specific land, it's the same origin land as the original power use.

  For example, The Land Thrashes in Furious Pain could be Repeated on an adjacent land without Blight.

General Play

• Can you Forget one Power Card to pay for multiple Forgetting requirements? (eg, a self-targeted Entwined Power in solo)
  No. Each Major Power gained must be paid for by Forgetting one Power Card, and that card can't be something you're Forgetting for some other benefit (like a different Major Power, or 3 Energy with Shape the Self Anew).

• If an effect says that you may X to Y (e.g., paying Energy to gain a Power Card, Destroying Presence to skip an Event on a board), are you allowed to get the second half for free if you can't do the first half?
  No, the second half is gated behind paying the cost in the first half. Similarly, "you may Y by X" requires paying the cost in the second half to get the effect in the first half.

  While this tends to be pretty obvious when the cost is paying Energy, it's less clear if the cost is performing some other effect, like discarding a card or removing Presence.

  While you must be able to pay the cost in order to get the bonus, ongoing effects can alter the final result of the cost being paid. For example, you can successfully pay the cost of "Destroy 2 Presence" even if Flowing and Silent Forms Dart By will end up saving that Presence from destruction if you do so. On the other hand, you can't attempt to pay the cost with Presence under Absolute Stasis, since that Presence only exists for Victory/Defeat – it doesn't exist as far as the Event is concerned.

Scenarios

• In Destiny Unfolds, if you only have Major Powers in your Destiny, can you gain Minor Powers normally from the deck? (Or vice versa)
  Generally no. Rather than choosing a deck to gain from, you choose a single Power in your Destiny to gain. If your Destiny only has Major Powers, you must gain a Major Power.

  However, if the source of the Power Card forces you to gain a Minor Power (e.g., Gift of Power) and you have none in your Destiny, gain one normally from the Minor Power Deck (and similarly for Major Powers).

Setup

• When setting a Spirit on a the thematic map, what happens if the setup instructions are impossible (e.g., adding Presence to a land with Blight when that board has no Blight).
  Either don't start that Spirit on that board or follow the instructions as best as you can, choosing freely when no lands meet the criteria given. [Jagged Earth Rulebook p. 6]

  When choosing freely, use theme as your guide — you're playing on the thematic map, after all!

• If a Spirit has multiple legal ways to set up on the island, can it choose the one it likes best?
  Yes, when there are multiple choices that equally meet the setup conditions, the player gets to choose the one they like. For some Spirits, this will only happen on the thematic side or against specific Adversaries/Scenarios.

Spirit Phase

• With Spirits that choose more than 1 Growth option, can I see the results of one choice before picking the next?
  Yes — you can completely finish resolving your first Growth choice before making your second choice.

• With Spirits that get to choose multiple Growth options, if more than one option has "Gain Power Card", can I gain a Power Card *then* pick which Growth choice I was using?
  No. You choose a set of things to do, then do them all. If you have multiple Growth choices, you then do this again, and cannot choose one you already picked this turn.

Spirits and Innate Powers

• Does "Reclaim half" on the first growth track of Starlight Seeks its Form mean half of the discard, or half of all your cards?
  Half of the discard.

• What's the timing on using new Growth options?
  Growth choices are made one at a time, so if you unlock a new Growth option by placing Presence, you can choose it immediately if you still have choices left. If you return Presence to a Growth row for some reason, you can’t use that Growth option until the row is unlocked again, and your selection of which Growth to cover remains. (You don’t get to revisit that decision.)

• Can the Healing Markers claimed by Wounded Waters Bleeding be used for anything other than checking which Healing Markers you have? (e.g., do they grant Elements?)
  No, Healing Markers are just Healing Markers; they don't do anything else associated with Elements or Element Markers.

  Element Markers don't inherently do anything; they're just used to track effects that are associated with Elements in some way. While Starlight Seeks its Form uses them to track permanent Elements, that's only because its Slowly Coalescing Nature special rule explicitly grants that effect. And while Shifting Memory of Ages can spend its prepared Element Markers for various effects, that's only because Insights into the World's Nature, Elemental Teachings, and its Presence Tracks grant those benefits.

• How do the elements placed onto Starlight's Presence tracks work?
  Once set, they work exactly like Elements on other Spirits’ Presence Tracks. If Presence is returned onto an Element, leave the Element Marker in place.

• Are there any Powers that use the words "Push" or "Gather" that Gift of Wind-Sped Steps can't make Fast?
  Not in Horizons of Spirit Island.

  In the Jagged Earth expansion, it can't affect Gather the Scattered Light of Stars — while that Power Card has "Gather" in its name, it doesn't have a Push/Gather instruction as part of its effect. (Other expansions have similar effects that check for specific instructions.)

• If Starlight returns Presence to one of its Growth track rows, does it lose access to that Growth choice?
  Yes, until that row is cleared again. (JE p. 32)

  When the row is cleared, the choice of which of the two Growth options to unlock cannot be revisited.

• What is the timing of specifying a new Presence-track Element for Starlight?
  As soon as it's revealed, even mid-action. Its panel should read "When you reveal a (star)", not "After you reveal a (star)". This rarely matters, but is also more consistent with how other Presence-track elements work.

  (Technically as written, if you revealed multiple stars in the same action, you would only cover one of them, which is why the change above matters.)

• Can a Spirit like Finder get its Presence in an in-play Ocean using "Move 1 Presence" on a growth track?
  No, because that is not a Power or Blight.

  The same applies to Presence placement during Growth or Growth options allowing movement.

  You can use Mists Shift and Flow to move Presence into the Ocean, as that happens as part of the targeting of a Power.
