Spirits and Innate Powers

• Promo 2, Feather & Flame - 2022 and earlier
  "Everything still works like you thought" Erratum for Finder of Paths Unseen -- All of Finder's Powers which move Presence can move Presence from any Spirit(s), not just Finder's Presence.

  Nature Incarnate clarifies that when a Spirit does stuff with Presence, it refers to that Spirit’s Presence unless otherwise specified.

  This is sort of a change from the previous default (the previous default wasn't consistent – e.g., Growth choices never bothered to specify that you were Adding your own Presence), but it only impacts two older items: Draw Towards a Consuming Void (which gets an updated version in Nature Incarnate) and Finder of Paths Unseen (which can definitely move Presence from any Spirit, but reprinting the Spirit Panel and 4 Uniques in NI would be somewhat prohibitive, so it's getting this erratum).

Definitions

• Can you "move" pieces from a land to that same land (e.g., with Wrap in Wings of Sunlight)? If so, is it considered a move?
  Yes and yes, assuming the instructions don't restrict where you're allowed to move, the way that Push and Gather do. (Wrap in Wings of Sunlight doesn't.)

  Thematically, pieces moved to the land they're already in are moving around within that land.

Effect Rules

• If a Spirit has a Growth Action that adds or moves its Incarna, can it just leave its Incarna in place (whether on the island or in the supply)?
  No, the Growth Action isn't optional: if the Incarna is in the supply, it must be added; if it's on the island already, it must be moved.

  That being said, you can count an Incarna on the island as Presence for the purpose of checking where it moves. So, e.g., Wandering Voice Keens Delirium can count its Incarna as the Presence it's moving the Incarna to, thereby moving the Incarna to the land it's already in (which would then add Strife with Spread Tumult and Delusion).

  Similarly, with its empowering growth option Ember-Eyed Behemoth can choose to move its Incarna to any land within range 1, including the land it's already in.

• What counts as "adding" a piece (e.g., adding an Invader for Confounding Mists)?
  A new piece getting placed on the board.
  

  In the Confounding Mists case, this most commonly occurs due to a Build or Explore action, but can also happen due to Events, Adversary effects, or Scenarios.

  Pieces that are pushed, gathered, brought, or otherwise moved then count as "moved," but not "added." Replacing one piece with another (or multiple others) counts as neither adding nor moving the new pieces; while the pieces representing that entity have changed, the entity itself is not a new arrival.

General Play

• If you "move" a piece to where it was (Range 0), does it still trigger effects like Wildfire's Blazing Presence?
  Yes, the piece has still formally moved. It never leaves the land, however, so would not trigger, e.g., Shifting Memory's Observe the Ever-Changing World, because the pieces in the land have not changed.

  Thematically, the piece has moved within the land.

  Note that if you use "add Presence" to instead reposition Presence already on the island (usually because you have run out – sidebar p.14 core rules), that is still considered an "add" rather than a "move".

Power Cards

• When using Sweep Into the Sea, what does "Push... one land towards the nearest Ocean" mean? What if you move a piece inland?
  When you Push towards the Ocean, the land you Push to must be closer to the nearest Ocean than the land they're currently in, measuring by Range. So a land 2 away from its closest Ocean could only Push to lands 1 away from that Ocean (Coastal to it). As with all ambiguous cases, if multiple Oceans are closest, you decide which one to consider "nearest".

  Similarly if you move a piece inland, you move it further away from the Ocean: each land it moves through must be further from (any) Ocean than the one it left.

  All game notions of "closer" and "further" use Range – you never need a ruler, and a land that looks physically closer might not actually be at shorter Range!

• If you use Bargain of Coursing Paths twice, can you move pieces back and forth between the marked lands an unlimited number of times?
  No, the first bargain can't trigger itself, even indirectly. In almost all cases, the pieces can move once from the first bargain and once from the second bargain, but won't move a third time.

  Cleverly overlapping multiple bargains in the same land(s) can squeeze out more than one move per bargain, but this is usually a waste of a bargain, rarely results in extra movement that matters, and grows in complexity far faster than it grows in utility. It is mentioned here only to acknowledge the possibility of constructing a situation where the above answer is technically incorrect, just not in a way that matters >99% of the time.

• If two lands are joined using Weave Together the Fabric of Place, is the conjoined land considered adjacent to itself?
  Changed ruling: No. (The old ruling was creating waaay too many weird edge cases.)
  

  The original ruling was made because the definition of "Coastal" is "adjacent to the printed Ocean", and a Coastal land Woven together with an in-play Ocean should definitely still be Coastal. Turns out it's much better to just rule that that's how it works.

• Can Wrap in Wings of Sunlight grant Defend if you Move 0 Dahan?
  No. "That land" means "the land moved to". You can choose to move 0 pieces, but then nothing moves, and no land was moved to.

• With Entwined Power, can Shroud of Silent Mist Gather another Spirit's Presence?
  Yes. When Shroud of Silent Mist targets a Power (which its Presence-Gather is part of) it treats the other Spirit's Presence as also being its Presence.

  If the effects of the special rule didn't have anything to do with targeting the Power, it might be more ambiguous (since Entwined Power is only supposed to affect targeting), but Mists Shift and Flow is very explicit that it can be used to target Powers.

• What happens if one Action adds or moves pieces into two lands that were marked by Bargain of Coursing Paths?
  They all move together to the same land, since that Action only triggers Bargain of Coursing Paths once.

  In the less common case that you move pieces into lands marked by different uses of Bargain of Coursing Paths, it'll trigger each of those bargains separately. Each bargain can then move pieces to a different destination land.

• If you target yourself with Growth Through Sacrifice and remove your only Presence on the island, is that land still considered "your land"? (So you could re-add a Presence to avoid losing?)
  No - "your land" / "your lands" are checked when you reach that instruction in the text. When it comes time to add a Presence to one of your lands, you have no lands and cannot do so.

  This logic doesn't apply to Moving or Repositioning your only Presence, however - in those cases, there's never a point in time when the Presence is off the island, so you still can measure Range or have a valid "your land".

• Can Bargain of Coursing Paths move pieces back into one of the marked lands?
  Yes. The pieces are still considered moved for the purpose of effects that check for that.

  This won't normally trigger Bargain of Coursing Paths again, since it can't trigger itself.

Scenarios

• For benefit #2 in Powers Long Forgotten, does "shifting" Presence count as moving it?
  No. (Nor does it count as repositioning it.) You may physically put the Presence in a different land, but it doesn't trigger anything that cares about moving or adding pieces, because metaphysically it hasn't moved. Nor does it check restrictions on movement, for similar reasons.

  The idea is that Presence in one Sands is in any Sands the Spirit wants... but if you try to phrase it that way a a zillion questions and edge-cases arise, so it's much cleaner/more predictable to phrase it as "you can put the Presence into another Sands but it's not a move". (Thematically, it doesn't represent movement, but the Spirit acting through its Presence in a different place.)

Spirits and Innate Powers

• When Relentless Gaze of the Sun uses its Growth Action to move up to 3 Presence, must those Presence come from the same land?
  Yes.

  "Move X Together" means "X must be together for the entire movement," not "X must move in a way that they are all together at the end of the movement."

• Can Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine choose Strife as one of the pieces escaping the Endless Dark?
  No, because Strife can't move independently of the Invader it's attached to. If you must choose two pieces to let escape, they must both be non-Strife pieces.

  Strife tokens will escape with the Invader they are attached to, but do not count towards the number of pieces escaping.

• If Eyes Watch From the Trees uses the threshold of *The Trees and Stones Speak of War*, do they get to Gather a Dahan afterwards? If so, when?
  Yes, they may Gather 1 Dahan into the target land after the Power is 100% finished (including the threshold, even if the threshold Pushes out all of the Dahan).

  It works because The Trees and Stones Speak of War only adds Defend to a single land. (The threshold effect may then move some of that Defend around.)

  Note that Eyes' bonus Gather will not move any Defend with the Dahan. That's a special feature of The Trees and Stones Speak of War.

• Can a Spirit like Finder get its Presence in an in-play Ocean using "Move 1 Presence" on a growth track?
  No, because that is not a Power or Blight.

  The same applies to Presence placement during Growth or Growth options allowing movement.

  You can use Mists Shift and Flow to move Presence into the Ocean, as that happens as part of the targeting of a Power.

• What happens when Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine abducts Presence belonging to Heart of the Wildfire?
  While Abducting Wildfire’s Presence does move it, The Endless Dark isn’t a land for Blazing Presence. On the other hand, Blazing Presence will trigger when the Presence eventually escapes.

• What does "move 1 Beast up to two lands" mean on Guide the Way on Feathered Wings?
  You may move 1 Beast to an adjacent land, then may again move that same Beast to an adjacent land.

  "Move" is used rather than "Push" because Many Minds' special rule about Pushing Beasts doesn't apply.

  Most Powers which use the word "move" move pieces directly from one land to another without going through the intervening lands - e.g., Wrap in Wings of Sunlight, Strong and Constant Currents. Technically this one does too, but in each case the move is constrained to an adjacent land, so in practice it acts more like Call to Migrate.

• Can Fathomless Mud of the Swamp target the origin land of Spreading and Dreadful Mire, or does that fail because moving Presence is required?
  Yes, you can target the origin land: “this is required” is a reminder that if it’s possible to Move a Presence, you must, not that you must choose a target where moving Presence is possible.

  (Also, while it's rarely relevant, you can technically Move a piece from a land to that same land, so long as the wording of the Power doesn't exclude doing so. Thematically, it’s moving within that land.)

• How does Reach from the Infinite Darkness work with Presence from Spirits with restrictions on where they can move Presence?
  Since Reach from the Infinite Darkness ignores these restrictions, Presence from those Spirits can be abducted without any issue. However, that Presence can only escape to lands that it could normally be moved to, whether Coastal lands (Ocean’s Hungry Grasp), Inland lands (Lure of the Deep Wilderness), or Mountains (Volcano Looming High). If Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine doesn’t have Presence or its Incarna in any legal lands, you must choose to let a different piece escape or lose the game.

  Every Growth option has a way to add or move Presence or the Incarna into a new land, so this generally won't be a loss threat unless multiple such Spirits have their Presence abducted and Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine is unusually low on Presence.

  No, abduct is a special form of movement and prevented by things that prevent movement.

  Similarly, escape is a special form of movement and is affected by things like Bargain of Coursing Paths.

• If I Gather/Push/otherwise move 2 Dahan at once, can I move 2 of Thunderspeaker's Presence along with them?
  Yes.

  The special rule says "whenever a Dahan moves ... you may move 1 Presence ...". Had you been limited to a single Presence, the rule would have been phrased, "whenever 1 or more Dahan move ... you may move 1 Presence ...".

• If Trickster's innate power Let’s See What Happens draws Strong and Constant Currents, can you swap 1 Dahan in the target land with 1 Dahan in a Coastal land?
  Yes, this satisfies the mandate to use "up to" instructions at their maximum value.

  (And both Dahan are considered to have moved, even though the ending board state may appear the same.)

• Finder of Paths Unseen has three Unique Powers which move/push pieces to "a land". Does that have to be a single land for the whole Power use?
  Yes – if you could move/push them freely it would say "to lands" or "to one or more lands" instead of "to a land".

  By contrast, Traveler's Boon can move pieces from different lands – though they have to all end up in the same place.
