Adversaries

• If the Kingdom of Sweden Explores into a land with Escalation, can a triggered action like Call to Guard get rid of that Explorer before the Escalation checks if a Dahan will be replaced?
  Yes, but you can choose the opposite order if you want to lose the Dahan.

  This only works because Sweden's Swayed by the Invaders Escalation checks how many Invaders and Dahan are present when that triggered action finally resolves, not when the land is Explored. (The Escalation technically happens in every explored land; it just doesn't do anything if the Invader & Dahan condition isn't met.)

• Does Sweden's Escalation effect happen if no Explorer was added?
  No, the Invaders have to successfully Explore in order to trigger the effect.

  It doesn't matter whether the Explore failed because of a lack of sources of exploration or from some other effect (eg, the Fear card Avoid the Dahan).

• For "Royal Backing" (The Kingdom of Sweden Level 4), what is the timing of the Invader Card discard? How does it combine with other Adversaries which stack the Invader Deck?
  "Royal Backing" rephrased for less ambiguity: "At the end of Setup (after resolving the initial Explore Card), Accelerate the Invader Deck. (Discard the topmost card of the lowest Invader Stage remaining in the deck.) On each board, add 1 Town to the land with fewest Invaders that matches the discarded card."

  The fact that it's Accelerating the deck instead of discarding off the top is only relevant when combining Adversaries and the top Invader Card (post-Explore) is a later Invader Stage moved upwards by Adversary instructions. (E.g., against The Kingdom of Brandenburg-Prussia Level 5, the next card is a Stage III card, but there are still Stage II cards left in the deck.)

• When the Kingdom of Sweden reveals an Escalation symbol, does the Escalation apply to all subsequent Explore Cards that turn?
  No, Swayed by the Invaders only applies to the card with the Escalation symbol, and not to any other Explore Cards.

  This also means that if the Escalation would happen when the card isn't an Explore Card (e.g., when combining with the Tsardom of Russia's Entrench in the Face of Fear), then the Escalation does nothing.

• How does "Invaders skip all actions" in a particular land interact with a Stage II Escalation affecting that land?
  If the Stage II Escalation is an Invader Action (i.e., Ravage, Build, or Explore), it's skipped. Otherwise, it is an Adversary Action and not affected.

  Specifically:

  • Directly skipped (Invader Actions): Kingdom of England, Habsburg Mining Expedition
  • Indirectly skipped (triggered by Invader Actions): Kingdom of Sweden
  • Unskippable: Kingdom of Brandenburg Prussia, Kingdom of France (Plantation Colony), Tsardom of Russia, Habsburg Monarchy (Livestock Colony), Kingdom of Scotland.

• Is the "6 or more damage to the land" check of Kingdom of Sweden's Level 1 Heavy Mining affected by modifiers to the land's health? (e.g., All Things Weaken, the Resilience Aspect for Vital Strength of the Earth)
  Yes. So they would need, e.g., 5 Damage to add Blight if the land has only 1 Health due to "All Things Weaken," but 14 Damage to add 2 Blight in a land with Vital Strength of the Earth {Resilience}'s Sacred Site.

  The same applies for the Habsburg Monarchy (Livestock Colony)'s extra loss condition (which would need 7 Damage in a 1-Health land to count Blight and 16 Damage in such a Sacred Site to count Blight).

Blighted Island cards

• If there's only 1 Blight on the Healthy Island card, and you need to add 2 at once (eg: Sweden 1), what do you do?
  Immediately flip the card; any Blight that was on it is added to the newly created Blight pool. If the Blight Card has any immediate effects, resolve them. Then add the 2 Blight to the board.

  Immediate effects of the flipped Blight card are nested actions - you resolve them completely (including anything they trigger) before returning to what you were doing.

Definitions

• When counting how many Invaders are in a land, are you counting pieces? Or do Towns count as 2 and Cities as 3?
  You're counting pieces.

  "Invader" in the Glossary is defined as "A City, Town, or Explorer", so a land with three Towns and a City has four Invaders in it.

  (A few effects instead key off of "N Health worth of Invaders", and in those cases Towns and Cities generally count for 2 and 3, respectively.)

  Similarly if checking if Dahan "outnumber" Invaders, you are counting physical pieces.

Effect Rules

• When Blight is added to a land with Vitality, does it destroy Presence?
  Not if there's enough Vitality to prevent all of the Blight from being added.

  Sufficient Vitality will also prevent extra effects of Blight being added, including those from Mining Rush (The Kingdom of Sweden Level 5), Irreparable Damage (The Habsburg Monarchy (Livestock Colony) Additional Loss Condition), Runoff and Bilgewater (The Kingdom of Scotland Level 5), Fragile Sands (Varied Terrains), and All Things Weaken (Blight Card).

• How does Vitality interact with effects that add two or more Blight at once (e.g., Kingdom of Sweden Level 1)?
  Each Vitality prevents 1 Blight. Depending on the number of Vitality relative to the number of Blight added, this may or may not prevent all of the Blight.

• When Blight is Added, what order do you perform all of the effects of Adding Blight? If you were in the middle of a Ravage, do you finish the Ravage first?
  Do the ‘Immediately’ effects on the Blight card, and then finish resolving whatever caused the card to flip (whether it's a Ravage or something else).

  More precisely, the order is:

  1. Take Blight off the card. If this empties the card, flip it, refill the Blight pool, and resolve any ‘Immediately’ effects on the card as a nested Action.
  2. Actually put the Blight in the land.
  3. Destroy Presence and do anything else that cares “when” this happens, like Kingdom of Sweden Level 5, Tsardom of Russia Level 1, or the Blight card All Things Weaken.
  4. If Blight was already present, cascade (returning to Step 1 in that adjacent land).
  5. Finish resolving the Action (usually the Ravage) that caused the Blight card to flip.
  6. Perform any Triggered Actions that care about Blight being added, like Kingdom of Scotland Level 5.

  In particular, if more Invaders are added to the land being Ravaged (e.g., with Promising Farmlands), they don't deal more damage, as that step has already happened; however, they are susceptible to a Dahan counterattack, and any new Dahan (e.g., with Unnatural Proliferation) would participate.

General Play

• On p. 28, the Jagged Earth rules say, "The bad effects of Blight happen each time Blight is added to a land, regardless of the quantity of Blight." Does that mean once per *action* that adds Blight, or literally every time you put Blight down?
  Literally every time you put 1 or more Blight into a land, including when you cascade. Presence destruction and cascading happen immediately, as a part of placing 1 or more Blight, they're not triggered actions. What this is saying is that the general rule works just like The Kingdom of Sweden Lvl 1: if you add 2 Blight at once, you only destroy Presence once and cascade if there was already Blight there. If you add 1 Blight, then anytime later add another Blight - eg, if you were to cascade out of a land, then back in - the bad effects of Blight happen again.

• If you damage an Invader/Dahan and then replace it with another Invader/Dahan, does the new piece enter the game damaged?
  Yes. (Rulebook p. 18) When you replace a piece with another piece, the new piece comes in with whatever Damage the original piece had.
  

  For example, if you deal 2 Damage to a City and then replace it with a Town, that Town is immediately destroyed.

  If you replace a damaged piece with two or more pieces (as when "Dissolve the Bonds of Kinship" replaces a City with two Explorers), the damage (and Strife tokens, if applicable) get divided between the new pieces as you choose.

  Note that if a piece is replaced as part of being saved from destruction (as is done by the Transforming Aspect), then Damage is cleared before the piece is replaced, so there's no Damage to divide. (Strife tokens are still divided normally, if relevant.)

Invader Actions

• When a Ravage changes which pieces are in other lands, can that cause additional Ravages from the current Ravage Card?
  No. Determine which lands Ravage before resolving any of those Ravages. A land with no Invaders at this point won't Ravage even if Invaders are later added or moved there. However:

  • If a land already has Invaders participating in Ravage, the new Invaders also participate in that Ravage. Depending on how well the land is Defended and how many Dahan are present, this could be good (more Invaders destroyed in the counterattack) or bad (the Ravage now adds Blight from the extra Damage). You can resolve the two Ravages in whichever order is more advantageous.
  • If there's another Ravage Card this turn, that card can now cause Ravages in any matching lands that are no longer empty.

  This applies both to lands that "naturally" match the Ravage Card (e.g., a Jungle when the Ravage Card is Sands+Jungles) and to lands that match the Ravage Card due to an extra effect (e.g., lands with 3+ Explorers against the Tsardom of Russia Level 3+). Thus, for instance, against the Tsardom of Russia level 3+, if a Ravage pushes an Explorer by the Level 2 effect "A Sense for Impending Disaster", it can't cause a Ravage to happen by the Level 3 effect "Competition Among Hunters" from the same card, but can cause a Ravage from a following Ravage Card added by the Level 5 effect "Entrench in the Face of Fear."

  Explore and Build Cards work similarly, albeit without the concern around the amount of Damage.

Play Options

• When combining Adversaries, how do you handle Escalation on Stage 3 Invader Cards when the Escalation cares about terrain? (France, Sweden)
  Choose one of the two land types randomly. (JE p. 19) Don't use "top terrain" or "bottom terrain"; they not equally distributed. If there's no other convenient way, spin the card and use the terrain that's closest to pointing at the Adversary panel.

  If you just apply the Escalation to both Explored terrains, Sweden's Escalation becomes much nastier and France's becomes much more lenient.

Setup

• Does Blight added during Setup come from the box or from the Blight Pool?
  All Blight added during Setup comes from the box. Unless specifically stated otherwise, the Blight Pool does not start out depleted.

  This applies to Blight added due to printed icons on the board (p. 6), an Invader's setup (like Sweden level 6) or a Spirit's setup (like Heart of the Wildfire).

Spirits and Innate Powers

• How does "Heavy Mining" (The Kingdom of Sweden Level 1) interact with the "Bestow the Endurance of Bedrock" special rule of Stone's Unyielding Defiance?
  The two Blight from "Heavy Mining" are added simultaneously, not sequentially, so "Bestow the Endurance of Bedrock" checks against the final Blight total.

  "Heavy Mining" stating that the second Blight cannot destroy Presence or cascade is just a reminder of the general rule that Presence destruction and cascades happen if Blight is added, not on a per-Blight basis – it's not a special ability granted to Sweden's second Blight to make it uniquely less harmful. (In the base game, this effect was the only was the only way 2 blight could be added simultaneously, so the rule was printed on the Adversary.)
