Effect Rules

• Jagged Earth - 1st and 2nd printings
  Update for Badlands tokens -- Instead of "the first time an action damages Invaders", each Badlands token boosts damage "one time an action damages Invaders". (So it could be the 2nd time, 3rd time, etc.)

  This is relevant only rarely - eg, on Pyroclastic Bombardment (which deals damage to Invaders multiple times with different restrictions on which Invaders can take Damage), or Voice of Command (which causes a Ravage to deal damage to Invaders multiple times with different restrictions).

  (Badlands works the same way for Dahan - boosting damage one time, rather than the first time - but there are no actions where that makes much of a practical difference.)

Effect Rules

• If a Power has a cap on the amount of Damage it can do, can Damage bonuses allow it to exceed that cap?
  Yes. The cap is on the "natural" amount of Damage the Power can do before any bonuses are applied.

  Similarly, if there is a cap on any other effect (e.g., tokens added by Utter a Curse of Dread and Bone), apply any bonuses after checking the cap.

• If a Badlands moves to a different land mid-action, can it boost Damage in both the original land and its new land?

• Are “Destroy” Powers “Damage dealing” Powers when used against Durable Invaders (e.g., for Flame's Fury)?
  Yes.

  For example, Asphyxiating Smoke deals 2 Damage to 1 Durable Town, so that can be increased to 3 Damage to 1 Durable Town by Flame’s Fury.

• Do Damage bonuses apply to actions that conditionally do Damage even if those conditions aren't met?
  No, it's impossible to boost an effect that isn't happening, whether because a player chose a different option (e.g., choosing to add a Badlands with Sear Anger Into the Wild Lands), the action is happening in a land that doesn't meet the conditions for the effect (e.g., Sear Anger Into the Wild Lands in a land without Wilds), or the relevant threshold isn't hit.

  Similarly, it's impossible to increase the Defend of an action that isn't already Defending, move more pieces with an action that isn't moving anything, etc.

  This is in contrast to checking the instructions of a Power to see if it has the potential to do something, like Gift of Wind-Spread Steps checking for Push/Gather instructions or the Violence Aspect checking for Damage/Destroy instructions.

Event Cards

• If the Event Beasts Prey on the Injured happens in a game with Many Minds Move as One, do Many Minds' Sacred Sites count as a Badlands?
  Yes. The Sacred Site counts as a Beasts due to Many Mind's special rule, then counts as a Badlands due to Beasts Prey on the Injured.

  Note that this isn't relevant for Settle Into Hunting-Grounds, since the Presence of a Spirit affected by it already counts as Badlands - see this FAQ.

General Play

• When a Power cares about how many Invaders that Power destroyed (eg: Mists of Oblivion, or Shadows' innate Power), do Damage boosts (Badlands, Flame's Fury) count?
  Yes. Damage boosts increase the amount of damage done, but the damage is still being done by the original source.

Invader Actions

• When Invader Damage Dahan, and it is boosted by Badlands, does the boost need to be applied efficiently?
  Yes.

  In general, Badlands damage boosts follow the restrictions of the damage they are boosting.

Power Cards

• With Settle into Hunting Grounds, can your Presence count as both Badlands and Beasts for the same action? (e.g., if an Event does Damage per Beasts)
  Yes.

  It can also count as just one or the other.

• If you've used Settle into Hunting-Grounds (your Presence counts as Beasts and Badlands), and draw the Beasts Prey on the Injured event (Beasts count as Badlands), does your Presence now count as 2 badlands each?
  No. "Piece A counts as Piece B" changes (roughly) "what does this physical object represent"; applying it multiple times has no effect.

• What happens when Invaders Ravage in a land with a Badlands affected by Voice of Command? Can Badlands damage that would normally be done to Dahan be assigned to Explorers?
  The Explorers are still considered Invaders - boosting Damage done to them does not count as boosting Damage to Dahan.

  Voice of Command changes what "side" the Explorers are fighting on during Ravage (from "attackers" to "counterattackers"), but does not change what type of pieces the Explorers are, which is what Badlands cares about.

• How does "+1 Damage with Damage-dealing Powers" (e.g., Flame's Fury) work? What exactly does it increase?
  For every power that does Damage, it increases one part of that Damage by 1.

  For instance, if a power does "1 damage to each Invader", Flame's Fury would let you do 2 damage to one of those Invaders. If a power does "1 Damage to each Town/City", Flame's Fury would let you do 2 damage to one of the Towns or Cities. If a power does "1 Damage to 1 Town/City", then Flame's Fury would let you do 2 Damage to 1 Town/City. If a power does "1 damage" and then (with another condition) another "1 damage", then you deal a total of 3 damage. If a power does damage in multiple different lands, you only get the bonus in one of the lands. If a power ends up doing no damage at all for some reason, then you do not get a damage bonus.

  You only get the bonus once per use of a damage-dealing power. If you use a Power multiple times by Repeating it, or if a Power sets up a triggered action that is triggered more than once, the bonus applies each time.

• How do Badlands / Flame's Fury work with Veil the Night's Hunt? How about Trickster's innate "Why Don't You and Them Fight"? Or (other Power that specifies unusual conditions on what can be damaged)?
  For Veil the Night's Hunt, deal 1 bonus Damage to an Invader that's already taking Damage. (You can't use it to deal damage to more Invaders than there are Dahan in the land.) For Let's You and Them Fight, damage boosts can only apply to the Dahan and Invader taking damage from each other.

  Badlands and Flame's Fury respect limits on "What could this Power have damaged?" This may include caps on the number of Invaders being Damaged, or specification of exactly which Invader(s) are to be damaged.

Spirits and Innate Powers

• Can Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares' Powers benefit from Badlands?
  Yes.

  This isn't necessarily obvious: To Dream a Thousand Deaths affects the instructions of Bringer's powers (see FAQ), and unlike most damage modifiers, Badlands applies when the results of an action deal Damage (otherwise "Badlands don't apply if Damage is reduced to 0" makes no sense). So on first blush, Badlands shouldn't apply.

  However, the effects of To Dream a Thousand Deaths key off "what pieces would this Damage/Destroy instruction have destroyed if this Power were doing Damage/Destruction normally?" – and the answer to that depends on Badlands.

• When Volcano uses Explosive Eruption, it deals damage both via destroying its Presence and the Innate Power. Does Badlands apply twice?
  No, because the damage from destroying its Presence isn't a separate action.

  The Special Rule says, "When your Presence is destroyed...", which means the damage is done as part of whatever action destroyed your Presence.

  (If it were instead a triggered action, it would say "After your Presence is destroyed".)

• Can Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine use bonus Damage from Badlands to Abduct Invaders?
  No, Badlands increase an existing instance of Damage rather than creating a new one. Either:

  • Breath is doing Damage to an Invader that is already alone and thus abducts it even before Badlands can increase the Damage; or
  • Breath is doing Damage to Invaders that are not alone, so no amount of extra Damage can result in abductions.
