Effect Rules

• If a Power has a cap on the amount of Damage it can do, can Damage bonuses allow it to exceed that cap?
  Yes. The cap is on the "natural" amount of Damage the Power can do before any bonuses are applied.

  Similarly, if there is a cap on any other effect (e.g., tokens added by Utter a Curse of Dread and Bone), apply any bonuses after checking the cap.

• Do Damage bonuses apply to actions that conditionally do Damage even if those conditions aren't met?
  No, it's impossible to boost an effect that isn't happening, whether because a player chose a different option (e.g., choosing to add a Badlands with Sear Anger Into the Wild Lands), the action is happening in a land that doesn't meet the conditions for the effect (e.g., Sear Anger Into the Wild Lands in a land without Wilds), or the relevant threshold isn't hit.

  Similarly, it's impossible to increase the Defend of an action that isn't already Defending, move more pieces with an action that isn't moving anything, etc.

  This is in contrast to checking the instructions of a Power to see if it has the potential to do something, like Gift of Wind-Spread Steps checking for Push/Gather instructions or the Violence Aspect checking for Damage/Destroy instructions.

• Are “Destroy” Powers “Damage dealing” Powers when used against Durable Invaders (e.g., for Flame's Fury)?
  Yes.

  For example, Asphyxiating Smoke deals 2 Damage to 1 Durable Town, so that can be increased to 3 Damage to 1 Durable Town by Flame’s Fury.

General Play

• When a Power cares about how many Invaders that Power destroyed (eg: Mists of Oblivion, or Shadows' innate Power), do Damage boosts (Badlands, Flame's Fury) count?
  Yes. Damage boosts increase the amount of damage done, but the damage is still being done by the original source.

Play Options

• When playing without Events, what type of Action is Commanding Beasts? Can you use your special rules to modify what the Beasts do?
  It is a separate Event Action for each land with Beasts (JE p. 20). A Spirit's special rules generally don't apply, since they usually only affect their Powers in particular or their Spirit Actions in general.

  For example, Sharp Fangs Behind the Leaves can move their Presence with the commanded Beasts, since their "Ally of the Beasts" special rule apply when Beasts move for any reason. On the other hand, Many Minds Move as One can't Push Beasts to lands 2 away, since their "Fly Fast as Thought" special rule only applies when they move the Beasts with Spirit Actions, not when Events move Beasts.

Power Cards

• If a Power deals Damage multiple times, can the Damage bonus from "Gift of Furious Might" be split across those instances of Damage?
  Yes, so long as all of the Damage is being done during the same use of the Power.

  For example, if a Spirit uses "Vigor of the Breaking Dawn" with its threshold and pushes Dahan into two different lands (dealing Damage in three lands), they could:

  • Deal +3 Damage in one land;
  • Deal +2 Damage in one land and +1 Damage in another land;
  • Get +1 Damage in each of the three lands.

  When using a Power like "Vengeance of the Dead" that deals Damage multiple times later in the turn in response to something else happening, the bonus applies only one of those times (though the bonus can still be split across multiple lands if you reached the threshold of "Vengeance of the Dead").

• Does the Damage bonus from "Gift of Furious Might" persist when the affected Power is Repeated?
  No, the bonus only increases one instance of dealing Damage, rather than boosting one Power for the entire turn. (This is more clear starting in the second printing.)

• Does Flame's Fury boost damage to Dahan?
  With Flame's Fury, you must boost one instance of Damage of your choice, either to Invaders or Dahan.

  Usually, you will choose to do that Damage to Invaders, but with a power like Twilight Fog Brings Madness, you would have to do extra Damage to Dahan. Note that this is different from Badlands, which separately boosts Damage to Invaders and to Dahan.

  With a power like Insatiable Hunger of the Swarm that deals damage to both Dahan and Invaders, you can choose to boost damage to Invaders, even if there are no Invaders in the land.

• How do Badlands / Flame's Fury work with "Veil the Night's Hunt"? How about Trickster's innate "Why Don't You and Them Fight"? Or (other Power that specifies unusual conditions on what can be damaged)?
  For "Veil the Night's Hunt," deal 1 bonus Damage to an Invader that's already taking Damage. (You can't use it to deal damage to more Invaders than there are Dahan in the land.) For "Why Don't You and Them Fight," damage boosts can only apply to the Dahan and Invader taking damage from each other.

  Badlands and "Flame's Fury" respect limits on "What could this Power have damaged?" This may include caps on the number of Invaders being Damaged, or specification of exactly which Invader(s) are to be damaged.

• When does the target Spirit choose when to use the Damage bonus of Gift of Furious Might?
  At the moment they do Damage. They don't have to "lock in" which Power gets the bonus in advance.

  This could be much later in the turn than the original Power use if the Power sets up a later condition for doing Damage (e.g., Vengeance of the Dead).

• When "Gift of Furious Might" boosts Damage that's limited in some way – like the first level of Rising Heat's innate, which only damages Explorers – is the bonus damage also limited?
  Yes.

  This is true for all sorts of limitations - type of piece that can be damaged, number of pieces that can be damaged ("Veil the Night's Hunt" / "Tempest of Leaves and Branches"), etc.

• Can "Gift of Furious Might" be used on Rising Heat of Stone and Sand to increase the damage from "Gift of Searing Heat"?
  Yes. "Gift of Furious Might" lets a Spirit boost the Damage of one of its Powers by +3. "Gift of Searing Heat" is one of Rising Heat's Powers (even though it's working with/through another Spirit) so it qualifies.

• How does "+1 Damage with Damage-dealing Powers" (e.g., Flame's Fury) work? What exactly does it increase?
  For every power that does Damage, it increases one part of that Damage by 1.

  For instance, if a power does "1 damage to each Invader", Flame's Fury would let you do 2 damage to one of those Invaders. If a power does "1 Damage to each Town/City", Flame's Fury would let you do 2 damage to one of the Towns or Cities. If a power does "1 Damage to 1 Town/City", then Flame's Fury would let you do 2 Damage to 1 Town/City. If a power does "1 damage" and then (with another condition) another "1 damage", then you deal a total of 3 damage. If a power does damage in multiple different lands, you only get the bonus in one of the lands. If a power ends up doing no damage at all for some reason, then you do not get a damage bonus.

  You only get the bonus once per use of a damage-dealing power. If you use a Power multiple times by Repeating it, or if a Power sets up a triggered action that is triggered more than once, the bonus applies each time.

Spirits and Innate Powers

• Can Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine use Damage bonuses (from Badlands or other sources) to abduct Invaders?
  Generally no. Damage bonuses increase an existing instance of Damage rather than creating a new one. Either:

  • Breath is dealing Damage to an Invader that is already alone and thus abducts it independent of the Damage bonus; or
  • Breath is dealing Damage to Invaders that are not alone, so no amount of extra Damage can result in abductions.

  That being said, if a Power can freely allocate Damage across multiple lands (e.g., "Rumbling Earthquakes"), a bonus that applies the Power as a whole (e.g., "Flame's Fury") can be used to spread Damage across more lands (in this example, dealing Damage in 7 lands rather than 6 lands), which could give Breath of Darkness Down Your Spine a chance to abduct Invaders in more places. This doesn't work for Damage bonuses that only apply in lands where you're already dealing Damage (e.g., Badlands and the Fire Markers of the Intensify Aspect) for the same reason that such bonuses don't help for Powers that deal Damage in only one land.

  Note that the "+" before Damage in Power thresholds (e.g., on "Accelerated Rot") is non-functional; that's a separate Damage instruction from the one in the main Power effect, and does give you a second chance to abduct Invaders.

• If Devouring Teeth Lurks Underfoot gets a Range bonus to Death Approaches from Beneath the Surface and targets a land at least Range 2 from its Presence, does it have to Gather Presence into that land?
  No, "Gather" can only bring in pieces from adjacent lands.

  If it used "Move" — e.g., "Move 1 Presence to the target land" — then it could happen at any Range, like Fathomless Mud of the Swamp's Spreading and Dreadful Mire.

• If *Gift of Searing Heat* is used on Devouring Teeth Lurk Underfoot, and Devouring Teeth chooses to do 1 Damage, does it get the +1 Damage bonus from its Territorial Aggression special rule?
  No. Territorial Aggression affects only Powers belonging to Devouring Teeth Lurk Underfoot. Gift of Searing Heat belongs to a different Spirit, even though it is letting Devouring Teeth do something.
