Frequently Asked Questions

General Play

• If an effect says that you may X to Y (e.g., paying Energy to gain a Power Card, Destroying Presence to skip an Event on a board), are you allowed to get the second half for free if you can't do the first half?
  No, the second half is gated behind paying the cost in the first half. Similarly, "you may Y by X" requires paying the cost in the second half to get the effect in the first half.

  While this tends to be pretty obvious when the cost is paying Energy, it's less clear if the cost is performing some other effect, like discarding a card or removing Presence.

  While you must be able to pay the cost in order to get the bonus, ongoing effects can alter the final result of the cost being paid. For example, you can successfully pay the cost of "Destroy 2 Presence" even if "Flowing and Silent Forms Dart By" will end up saving that Presence from destruction if you do so. On the other hand, you can't attempt to pay the cost with Presence under "Absolute Stasis," since that Presence only exists for Victory/Defeat – it doesn't exist as far as the Event is concerned.

Power Cards

• If you Forget a Power Card partway through resolution, do you continue resolving it? (Eg: if you gain a Major Power with Entwined Power, and Forget Entwined Power.)
  Yes. The Power Card is no longer in play, so you no longer gain the benefits of its elements, and you cannot Repeat it, but you do finish the current use.

• What is the exact timing of "you may do both?" on cards like Growth Through Sacrifice?
  It's checked at the moment you need to know, so as soon as you must choose A ~or~ B.

  For Growth Through Sacrifice, you check the threshold as soon as you face the choice between "add a Presence" and "remove a Blight" (to see if you can do both). If you don't have 2 Sun at that point, it doesn't matter if you get 2 Sun by adding a Presence, the time for checking "can you do both?" has passed. (Note that the ordering of the two options is irrelevant to this.)

  For Unleash a Torrent of the Self's Own Essence, the choice comes at the very start of the card, so if you have the threshold at that point, you still get to do both even if Forgetting a card (from play) for the first option drops you below the threshold for the 2nd option.

Range and Targeting

• When a special rule grants a Range boost specifically for targeting lands with specific traits/contents, like Shadows of the Dahan, does that apply to Range arrows within a Power's text?
  No, that bonus is specifically for choosing the target of a land-targeting Power.

  Use the Power as though the number in the "Range" box were increased or completely ignored (depending on the Range boost in question) and the extra target requirement were included in the "Target Land" box. In the case of Shadows of the Dahan, this means ignoring the Range number entirely (but not anything else in the "Range" box!) and adding "Dahan" to whatever else is already in the "Target Land" box.

  This differs from general-purpose Range boosts, which apply to all Range arrows.

  Though early printings of Sky Stretches to Shore use the word "targeting," the text of that Power has been revised to work like other Range-boosing Powers and is not subject to this restriction.

Spirits and Innate Powers

• Can Relentless Gaze of the Sun use Relentless Punishment to repeat Spirit-targeting Powers?
  No, a Spirit-targeting Power doesn't have an origin land.

  (Some Spirit-targeting Powers technically have origin lands for specific Range checks in their effects, like for the Damage in Unleash a Torrent of the Self's Own Essence, but the Power as a whole still doesn't have an origin for Relentless Punishment to count Presence in.)
