Frequently Asked Questions

Adversaries

• How does "Invaders skip all actions" in a particular land interact with a Stage II Escalation affecting that land?
  If the Stage II Escalation is an Invader Action (i.e., Ravage, Build, or Explore), it's skipped. Otherwise, it is an Adversary Action and not affected.

  Specifically:

  • Directly skipped (Invader Actions): Kingdom of England, Habsburg Mining Expedition
  • Indirectly skipped (triggered by Invader Actions): Kingdom of Sweden
  • Unskippable: Kingdom of Brandenburg Prussia, Kingdom of France (Plantation Colony), Tsardom of Russia, Habsburg Monarchy (Livestock Colony), Kingdom of Scotland.

• How does the Stage II escalation (flag) effect for Brandenburg-Prussia work? Which lands can I add a town to?
  First, you check each board (section of the map) to see if there is at least one Town or City. (Usually, there will be.) Then pick one land on that board that doesn't currently have a Town in it, and add a Town there.

  The new Town can be where the Invaders already are (with Explorers and/or Cities), or can be well away from any existing Invaders. If there are no lands without Towns on the board, then no new Town is added.

  This happens before the actual Exploration, so the Prussians might Explore from the Town that you just added.

  You can choose the position of the Town to be best for you (and it's expect you will—otherwise it would be too punishing).

• When does Brandenburg-Prussia Level 2's early Stage III card count as Stage III and when does it count as Stage II?
  It only counts as Stage II for "What Invader Stage is the game in?" (Eg, for Events, or the rules for playing with Beasts tokens but no Events.) It's still a Stage III card for anything that cares about the Stage of a specific card (e.g., the rules for Combining Two Adversaries, or Fractured Days' unique power The Past Returns Again).

  This is the only specially-placed Invader card that acts differently; other cards act like their printed Stage in all circumstances.

• On the "Slave Rebellion" Event card, what does it mean to "return this card to the Event Deck as per Setup"?
  If you draw this card when not playing against France at Level 2 or higher, you should not have this card in the deck--discard it and draw another. If you are playing against France, then there are instructions on the Kingdom of France Adversary card; follow those.

Invader Actions

• Do Stage II Escalations happen before or after the Explore?
  If it is not specified, it happens before the Explore.

  This means that, e.g., Brandenburg-Prussia can add a Town that then acts as a source for the Exploration that happens immediately afterwards.

Spirits and Innate Powers

• What Invader cards are "specially placed during Setup" for Visions of a Shifting Future or Rising Interest in the Island?
  Any card that was moved by Adversary or Scenario instructions.

  As of the release of Nature Incarnate, this includes:

  • The early Stage III card of Kingdom of Brandenburg-Prussia Level 2.
  • The early Stage II cards and Coastal card of Kingdom of Scotland Level 2, and the early Stage III card of Scotland Level 4.
  • The interleaved Stage III cards of Tsardom of Russia Level 4 (but not the Stage II cards they alternate with).
  • The Salt Deposits card of Habsburg Mining Expedition Level 4.

  The only Event that is currently specially placed is France's Slave Rebellion.

• When Ocean's Hungry Grasp is in play against Brandenburg-Prussia, can the extra Towns from the Stage II Escalation be placed in the Ocean (and drowned immediately)?
  No. The Ocean is only a land for the purpose of Powers and Blight, and not, for instance, for Events, Fear cards, or Stage II escalation effects.
