During a Ravage by the Habsburg Mining Expedition Level 1+, does the upgrade from Avarice Rewarded happen before or after the Dahan counterattack?

Before, when Blight would normally cascade. If the surviving Dahan are numerous enough to take out the newly-upgraded piece, the upgrade may be to your advantage.
