Voracious Consumption

Frequently Asked Questions

Aspects

• How many Presence can the Dark Fire save from Blight Cards like Downward Spiral or Blighted Island Events like Voracious Consumption?
  If “each Spirit” Destroys Blight (e.g., "Downward Spiral"), then "Frightful Shadows Elude Destruction" can save 1 Presence. If, on the other hand, Presence is Destroyed “on each board” (e.g., "Blight Corrodes the Spirit"), then "Frightful Shadows Elude Destruction" can save 1 Presence per board. A single Presence can even be saved from destruction multiple times by being Pushed onto a new board each time.

Effect Rules

• If an effect happens after a particular step of the Invader Phase (e.g., "after the Build Step") and there are multiple Invader cards in the corresponding space, does it happen after resolving each card?
  No, resolve the triggered action(s) after the entire step is over, once you've finished resolving every card in that step. If the triggered action references the corresponding cards, it refers to all of those cards.

  So, for example, when up against Habsburg Monarchy (Livestock Colony) Level 1+ and have both a "Jungles" card and a "Mountains+Wetlands" card in the Build Space, then (in order):

  • The Invaders build in Jungles;
  • The Invaders build in Mountains and Wetlands;
  • "Migratory Herders" triggers, gathering Towns from Sands into each Jungle, Mountain, and Wetland.

• If a "Spirits may prevent this on any/all boards" effect wouldn't do anything on a particular board it's affecting, can Spirits sacrifice Presence there anyway?
  Yes. The sacrifice is to prevent the rest of the Event Action from resolving on that board, not to prevent the actual results of that Event there.

  Choosing to sacrifice Presence this way isn't generally advantageous, but can be used to set up for a Power that uses destroyed Presence, like "Blazing Renewal." Some Spirits also get benefits when their Presence is destroyed or would be destroyed, like Volcano Looming High dealing Damage via its "Collapse in a Blast of Lava and Steam" special rule, making that sacrifice situationally useful even with no future plans for that Presence. And in particularly rare cases, Spirits can even use this to disable a normally-beneficial effect granted by their Presence.

  If the Event only applies to specific boards, you can't sacrifice Presence on other boards. For example, "The Center Crumbles" ("On Each Board with Invaders: Add 1 Blight to an Inland Land") doesn't even attempt to do anything on boards without Invaders, so Presence can't be destroyed to prevent the nonexistent Event Action there. On the other hand, Spirits can sacrifice Presence to prevent that Event on a board with Invaders but with no Inland lands (e.g., because "Weave Together the Fabric of Place" has merged all lands on that board into Coastal lands), since the Event still happens on that board despite it being unable to add Blight.

Event Cards

• When do Spirits decide whether or not to destroy Presence for the Voracious Consumption event?
  When the effect triggers on that particular board after the Ravage Step.

  The payment is to prevent the addition of Blight, not to prevent the creation of the "after the Ravage Step,..." triggered action when the Event Card is initially resolved.
