Raisins on Fish Days
Serves 8
Ingredients
Steps
-
Grind the almonds in a mortar and pestle.
-
Boil the almonds in half a cup water until most of the water is gone.
-
Stir in the raisins and another half cup water, and boil until mostly dry. Remove from heat.
-
Stir in the salt, sugar, saffron and coriander.
Notes
We didn't get much saffron color in this, probably because the mixture was fairly dry by the time we added it. It might want to go in with the raisins, and have some time in the cooking down.
This was reconstructed based on the secondary source, which specifies "coriander". Note that the original, which Aaron managed to dig out afterwards, says "solyaundres". While I'm loathe to doubt Constance Hieatt, we should figure out whether that really meant saunders instead. Unfortunately, the word is listed in neither Cury en Inglysh nor the OED, so we're left with educated guesswork. I don't love either interpretation, but they seem about equally problematic.
