Did this with about one pound of sugar, using my small brown Pyrex baking pan. Worked decently well, but took much longer than described -- about six hours to get reasonably serious caramelization. Also, the top layer got rather hard pretty quickly, so do the first stir after only half an hour. (After that, the hardening didn't recur.)
