Character Hint

You are Samuel Antonino, Office Manager at Decameron Enterprises. You are horribly shaken up by today's events -- Seamus always seemed like such a nice boy, and you can't imagine why he would do something like this. You were through something like this once before, years ago, and you had thought the scars of that day had faded, but this has left you in shock once again. But the employees are all looking at you to be the calm and sensible one, they way they always do, so you are trying to hold it together for them.

Character Sheet

You are Samuel Antonino, long-time Office Manager at Decameron Enterprises. Folks often ask why you're still in the same position after almost twenty years, but you've never seen any reason to move on. It's satisfying work, riding herd on all these folks and making sure things run smoothly. You're in your mid-50s, which is awfully late to think about changing horses. And until today, it's been good.
Well, maybe not all good. You remember the hard days, fifteen years ago, when the company had fallen on hard times: folks just weren't into model rockets any more, and most of the company's money was tied up in them. When the warehouse burned down, you almost lost heart -- it seemed like God himself was saying that the company just wasn't meant to be any more. But God bless Roger: he pulled everyone together, got them all fired up, and thanks to the insurance company, gave the company a new lease on life. You've admired him ever since -- it shows real gumption to recover from a blow like that.
Which is part of why, today, you can't quite stop shaking. To think -- your office is right next to Roger's. You could have been one of the people who Seamus shot! And it's bringing back the old nightmares of those last days at Violet City University, when you were working there as a junior administrator -- what, was that really 30 years ago now? The day when that madman took over the bell tower and began shooting people at random; well, you were there that day, and you remember the shots ringing so close to you as you ran. It was the most terrifying moment of your life, and it took years (including a couple of years of therapy) for the nightmares to really calm down.
Of course, you weren't at the job all that long, what with those radical students burning down the administration building. No one was hurt that time, thank heavens, but the school declared that they needed to "trim the workforce" while they were rebuilding, and you didn't exactly have tenure. Of course, the police figured out which brats were responsible, but couldn't prove anything; you've rather resented them ever since. And to think: now one of them is the Mayor, of all things! When you realized that a few months ago, you went straight to Fred Ronit and told him all about it. The Ronit campaign has made sure that everyone knows all about Mayor Ferdinand's shady, radical past. Serves her right: you try not to wish anyone ill, but you certainly don't like to see criminals prosper.
But the past couple of days -- well, calling it insane is an understatement. First, as you were walking outside Roger's office yesterday, you heard him in some sort of shouting match with Seamus O'Malley. You couldn't tell what they were yelling about, but you could just hear another voice as well, and then some laughing, before Seamus stormed right out the door. It was so uncharacteristic of the -- well, you would say "the poor boy", but after all of this, you hardly can.
Then this morning -- well, it started so normally. You got into the office around 8:30, poured yourself a cup of coffee, and settled down to email. Then, a bit after 9 am, you heard Roger yell something, and then there was that bang. You literally fell out of your chair, and were paralyzed for a minute. You crept over to your door and looked down the hallway just in time to see Seamus pointing the gun into Frank Meyer's office; when you heard another bang you dove back into your office and just sat there on the floor, your back to the wall, praying he wouldn't come back for you. Then another shot, and you heard footsteps running past your office, and someone banging around in Roger's. And then another shot, and then lots of screaming and yelling. Then things started to quiet down, but then more banging around in Roger's office (what on Earth was everyone doing in there?). Finally, a few minutes later, Carla poked her head into your office, and seemed startled to see you sitting there. But after a moment, she smiled sort of sadly, and very gently told you you needed to get up and start getting everyone together and away from the crime scene. You were mortified -- you never wanted her to see you like that -- but slowly and shakily did as she asked. She has already sent most people to the lobby, but you looked in all the offices along the way, and helped one or two more people along there.
You were embarrassed not to be able to be all that much help to the police, and quietly just said that you hadn't seen much. The policemen were quite nice about it, but told you that the detectives will want to ask you more questions once they get here.
And now, yes, lots of shaking. But you know that everyone is looking to you to be the calm, sensible port in the storm, and you need to be there for the employees. Of course, Carla, practical as always, has asked you to talk to everyone and remind them that they are under NDA about company business, especially about Project Sureshot. You do wonder whether this whole thing is some kind of sign, though, that Decameron never should have taken the Government's money for that project in the first place. Who ever thought Decameron would be making guns, of all things? It's such a terribly far cry from those innocent model-rocketry days...

Who You Know

  • Roger Cameron: The founder of Decameron Enterprises, and a man you quite respected. The notion of him being dead -- well, it is a terrible day for the company.
  • Millie Cameron: Roger's poor wife. She's always been so devoted to him, standing by his side through thick and thin. You can't imagine what she must be going through.
  • Ainsley Cameron: Even worse than Millie is poor Ainsley. No child should have to lose a parent so young. Not that Ainsley is a child -- she's been hanging around the office a good deal lately, with the younger engineers, and has been vigorously reminded everyone that she's 17, and will be leaving for college before long. Who knows now, though? You should probably see how she is doing, and make sure she's being properly cared for. (Not that Millie is a bad mother, but you've gotten the sense that things between her and Ainsley have been a bit strained in recent years.)
  • Seamus O'Malley: It's hard to imagine Seamus, of all people, doing something so terrible. He always struck you as such a gentle soul -- really, the way he talked, you would always think he should have been an artist rather than an engineer. He's only been with Decameron for a year, but you had come to rather like him.
  • Paula Vasilios: One of Seamus' close friends -- all of those young 20-somethings naturally grouped together. It's a tragic irony: she was always the most outspokenly anti-gun one, but in the end was the one who had to grab a gun from Roger's cabinet (he always kept several of his favorites in his office) and shoot Seamus to stop him.
  • Jonathan Sheena: Your intern for the past six weeks, he has proven ideal for the job: diligent about learning the ins and outs of the company, often working long hours to make sure everything was in order. Frankly, you've been inclined to ask Roger to make him a job offer as soon as he graduates. Now, you aren't sure that he'd want to come back, though, especially since he and Seamus had become such close friends. (You've heard that Seamus was actually there with Jonathan when he was finally stopped. Morbid curiosity leads you to wonder what he wanted to say for himself.)
  • Isaiah Zubin: The company's first engineer, one of the few employees who have been with Decameron longer than you. Generally quite likeable, but his tone soured after his wife passed away from breast cancer about five years ago, poor thing. And today, his daughter got caught in Seamus' rampage. You can hardly imagine how disconsolate he must be; you had better make sure you help him out as needed.
  • Carla Lennart: The real rock of the company, for all folks make out that you are. Carla is always so cool and collected, even in the midst of chaos like today. The truth is, you've had a crush on her for years. Not that you'd ever say anything to someone so glamorous, and you know that she would never be interested, but you would swear that sometimes she is flirting with you, just a little. So hope springs eternal...
  • Shrivatsa Kiran: Another of the young engineers Roger hired a year or so ago; he has the most delightful Indian accent, and has been a very respectable hard worker.
Last month, he fessed up that him visa had expired, and asked you for help with that. You honestly don't know quite what to do about it -- the rules say that you are supposed to arrange visas in advance, as far as you know -- but you've begun looking into it. He is a valuable employee, and shouldn't have to suffer because of silly and arbitrary immigration rules.
  • Regan Archie: The company lawyer. Not a bad sort, as lawyers go, but always strikes you as slightly cold. But today, she is clearly going to be needed, to help figure out what to do next.
  • Helen Derren: The company's original investor -- an old friend of Roger's, who put some money into Decameron and made out like a bandit. The truth is, you rather like her: she is always friendly and relaxed, it seems. But it does seem rather unfair that the person who seems to have become richest off the company has never actually worked here.
  • Jeri Ferdinand: The Mayor of Violet City. You were startled when you finally realized that she was one of those nasty radicals who burned down the Violet City U Admin building all those years ago, and cost you your job. She obviously shouldn't be Mayor, and certainly has no business running for a position as respectable as Senator.
  • Fred Ronit: One of the founders of Decameron, along with Roger. While Roger provided the organization and good sense, Fred was always the company's vision, figuring out which products to invent and which way to go next. You've heard rumors that it was his idea to come up with Sureshot in the first place, and you suppose it's possible, although you do wish that terrible invention had never happened in the first place.
Fred got tired of the business life about, oh, seven or eight years ago -- he had always had more passion for politics than anyone else around, and so he decided to make it a full-time job. He got elected as a State Representative as part of the Tea Party thing (you helped out with the campaign a little), and has been quite the firebrand at the State House. Now, he is running for Senator, and while you do sometimes find his ideas a little extreme, you can hardly think of a better person to represent Vermillion in Washington -- honest, forthright, just the sort of upstanding person you rarely see in politics.
  • Robert Gervasio: A veteran of Iraq, who wound up homeless and abandoned on the streets afterwards. He has been living in the park across the street for longer than you care to imagine, and it's crying shame, because he is clearly a smart and brave person. You and Roger were introduced to him a while back (by Mayor Ferdinand, come to think of it, showing that he isn't entirely bad), and you've been careful to welcome him into the office ever since. He often comes in to use the company's locker room to take a shower, or to simply have a warm cup of coffee and chat. You've been realizing recently that it took you years of therapy to really get past your shooting incident, and he has been through far worse. So you have begun to try and figure out the VA system, to see how to get him the help he needs. (And how to convince him to accept it -- he still has his pride, which is admirable but sometimes makes him stubborn.)
You've heard that he was in the office when Seamus came through -- you should make sure that he is okay, and maybe find ways that he can help out during this crisis.
  • Aidan O'Malley: Seamus' older brother -- you had suspected that from the resemblance, but got it confirmed a few months ago. He is the priest at Lady of Redemption, down the street, and a good man. He's been a pillar of the community since he took on the parish a few years ago, and you hate to think of him troubled by his brother's actions.
  • Jamie Rickie: The company's in-house accountant; another long-timer, if not quite as long as you. He is always very exact and diligent about his work; not the warmest person in the company, but part of the family. He seems a bit agitated by all the police prowling around, for some reason.
  • Brian Truman: The representative from Greyrock Investments, Decameron's venture investor in recent years. Not part of the family, but Roger has always made it terribly clear that you are to provide him with every required assistance at all times. As he liked to put it, "Greyrock may be greedy capitalists, but they are our greedy capitalists, so we need to keep them happy." He doesn't look terribly happy now, so you'd better see what you can do to help.
  • Frank Meyer: The poor man. Another long-timer, he had been around almost as long as Isaiah, and had worked his way up to be Chief of Research and Development. All of that cut off today by Seamus...

GM Notes

Sie was tangentially involved in a previous shooting incident, years ago, and was fairly traumatized by it at the time. Sie thought sie was past that, thanks to a lot of therapy, but is on the verge of emotional collapse right now.
Sie has been assigned by C Lennart to remind everyone who knows about Sureshot of their NDAs, and that they are strictly required to not talk about Sureshot to anybody outside the company.
Has a long-standing unrequited crush on C Lennart. He knows that Carla isn't interested, but she often seems to flirt a little bit, so hope springs eternal.
Sie was outside Roger's office yesterday afternoon, and heard Roger and Seamus in some kind of shouting match. Sie also heard another male voice, but wasn't sure who it was.
Sie is very protective of L Amilcar, in a rather patronizing but sincere sort of way. Has a typically schizoid-American view of the whole thing: sie is opposed to Those Wetbacks who are coming in hordes over the border, but doesn't consider L Amilcar to be one of those -- sie is simply a victim of circumstance, who has proven hirself to be a good citizen over many years.
Many years ago, sie was a junior admin at Violet City University. Sie lost that job in the wake of a fire in the administration building; everyone knew that it had been set by a bunch of student radicals, but no one could ever prove anything. Sie found a new job at Decameron, but nursed a grudge for a long time. A year or so ago, sie realized that the current Mayor, J Ferdinand, was one of the students who had set the fire. Sie told the Newbold campaign about this a few months ago, and has been gratified to see that they have been hammering Ferdinand over it ever since. Sie prefers to be a nice person, but doesn't like to see criminals prosper.
