Cynically Moderate Democrat
Was a liberal activist in his college days, but had to become more buttoned-up when he first ran for a congressional seat in the Clinton days. Has learned to be almost religiously moderate, in order to combat the constant attacks from the right about his youthful indiscretions. (Need some detail about these indiscretions -- some should be public, some should be essentially political blackmail.)
Deep down, really still wants to be the liberal zealot, but is a deep devotee of the Politics of the Possible.
