One or more Crime Scene Investigators. Kate suggests two of them, with a rivalry going on. The trick will be giving them enough to do, so it is possible that in practice one CSI and one Detective is what we should work with. (And/or a Medical Examiner.)
These characters are likely a good way to get information into the game -- in particular, they should be feeding info to the rest of the police, to invite questions.
