Design away from the menus

Summary: It's pretty obvious by now that our menus are at best so-so on desktop, and suck on phones. We need a serious redesign.
See this excellent article with a collection of ideas about how we might do this. A judicious combination of these techniques might allow us to eliminate the menubar entirely.
